Adopting a Cat with FIV
Cats with Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) are often overlooked in rescue, but in reality they can make wonderful, loving companions.
What Is FIV?
FIV is a virus that affects a cat’s immune system. It is species-specific, meaning it cannot be passed to humans, dogs, or other animals. Many FIV-positive cats live long, healthy lives and may never show symptoms.
How Is FIV Spread?
FIV is mainly transmitted through deep bite wounds, usually from fighting between unneutered cats. It is not spread through sharing bowls, grooming, litter trays, or sleeping together.
With proper introductions and a calm household, FIV cats can often live happily with other cats.
Caring for an FIV Cat
Caring for an FIV-positive cat is much the same as caring for any cat, with a few simple precautions:
-
Neutering is essential, especially for toms, as it reduces fighting and stress.
-
A calm, stable home is especially important as stress can weaken their immune system further.
-
Indoor living or secure outdoor access (such as a catio)
-
Good nutrition
-
Regular vet check-ups
-
Prompt treatment if they become unwell
Life Expectancy
With good care and a safe lifestyle, many FIV cats live just as long as non-FIV cats. Sadly, many lose their lives due to lack of adoption rather than the virus itself.
Why Adopt an FIV Cat?
FIV cats are affectionate, playful, and full of personality — they just need someone willing to look past the diagnosis. By adopting an FIV-positive cat, you’re giving a loving home to a cat who may otherwise be overlooked.
